This is atopic dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that occurs in flare-ups and manifests itself through dry skin, skin redness and severe itching.

“Atopic” comes from the term “atopy” and refers to the genetic disposition to produce an exaggerated reaction to environmental allergens. The term ”dermatitis” refers to a skin inflammation that manifests itself as eczema.

The skin rashes typically occur in flare-ups that differ in intensity and length. The first symptoms usually occur in infancy and may decrease again with increasing age.

In Europe, about 3% of adults suffer from this inflammatory disease. In infants, every fifth children is affected today.

There is no cure for atopic dermatitis. With the appropriate skin care and the avoidance of irritants, symptoms and the occurrence of new flare-ups can, however, be significantly reduced.

Skin symptoms change depending on the phase (acute or chronic) and on age. There is usually skin redness and severe itching. In acute phases, small blisters form that may develop into weeping skin inflammations through scratching. In the chronic phase, i.e. between flare-ups, atopic dermatitis manifests itself through extreme dryness of the skin over the whole body, itching and redness. Both forms may occur at the same time on different parts of the body.

In adults, atopic dermatitis usually manifests itself on the face, neck, hands, feet, elbows and behind the knees – although any area of the skin may be affected. The affected areas are often thickened, leathery and dull.
