How to treat atopic dermatitis

In treatment, a distinction is made between external approaches and medication-based approaches.

Consistent daily skin care (basic therapy) is the most important treatment to keep the skin healthy. Replenishing and moisturising care helps build up the barrier function of the skin and thus to prevent another flare-up of the disease. Generally, the disease can be significantly improved and controlled through consistent basic therapy for the skin and, wherever possible, by avoiding trigger factors.

Correct basic therapy

  • Twice a day
  • In a quiet and relaxed atmosphere
  • Wash your hands first
  • Apply a lotion to the whole body from top to bottom
  • Use enough lotion so that your skin is not excessively greasy after ten minutes, but not bone dry after one hour either

Acute atopic dermatitis is often treated with anti-inflammatory therapies, e.g. cortisone ointments. Although cortisone effectively inhibits inflammation, it has the disadvantage that it may cause damage to the skin with long-term use.

In the case of severe atopic dermatitis, in addition to external treatments, medication is also administered to inhibit allergic reactions. Light therapy can also reduce the occurrence of disease flare-ups and relieve symptoms.

Optimum treatment of atopic dermatitis should be discussed with a doctor or pharmacist.
